Panauti is a city (municipality) in Nepal south of Banepa in the Kabhrepalanchok district , a short distance outside the Kathmandu Valley .
The inhabitants are to a large extent Newari , which is strongly reflected in the cityscape: multi-level pagoda temples , carved wooden windows and doors as well as the general medieval city structure with its narrow streets.
Panauti is definitely worth a visit for those interested in Newarian culture, especially because there was still little uncontrolled construction of modern buildings. The main attraction is the Indreshwar Mahadev Mandir (temple).
A visit from Kathmandu can be designed as a day trip, the bus ride takes about an hour and a half from the old bus station ( Ratna Park ). The urban area covers 31.73 km².
Residents
At the 2011 census, Panauti had 27,358 inhabitants (13,091 men) in 5943 households.
