Kankai ( Nepali कन्काई Kankāī ) is a city ( municipality ) in the extreme east of the Terai in Nepal in the Jhapa district .

The city was created in 2014 from the amalgamation of the Village Development Committees Ghailadubba and Surunga . Kankai is 10 km west of Birtamod on the Mahendra Rajmarg highway . The Kankai River flows along the western city limits. The urban area covers 79.1 km².

At the 2011 census, the VDCs that made up the city of Kankai had 40,141 residents.
