The Kankai ( Nepali कन्काई Kankāī ; Hindi कंकई Kaṅkaī ) is a right tributary of the Mahananda in Nepal and India .

The Kankai rises on the western flank of the Singalila ridge , which forms part of the Mahabharat chain . The headwaters are located in the northeast of the Nepalese district of Ilam not far from the Indian border. The Kankai is also called Mai Khola in the upper reaches . The river flows through the mountains in the Ilam district in a southerly direction and reaches the Jhapa district to the south . There it breaks through the Siwalik chain and flows through the Teraebene . The city of Kankai is on the east bank of the river. The Kankai crosses the border into India. The last 70 km the Kankai flows through the north of the Ganges plain in the Indian state of Bihar . The Ratuwa flows into the Kankai on the right. The districts of Kishanganj , Araria and Purnia lie on the river . The Kankai finally joins the Mahananda west of the city of Dalkhola on the right . The Kankai has a length of about 180 km.
