course
The Mahananda rises in the Siwaliks , the lower foothills of the Himalayas in the Darjeeling area east of the city of Klassenong in the Indian state of West Bengal . The river leaves the mountains in a southerly direction and reaches the Ganges plain . There it turns to the southwest and flows through the city of Siliguri . Then the Balason flows into the river on the right; later the Jhora and the Chenga flow towards it from the west. The Mahananda is gradually turning south. The Mechi and the Kankai , both coming from Nepal , flow to the right side of the river.
The Mahananda flows in the lower reaches as the Fulahar along the western border of the Malda district and flows into the Ganges at Manikchak . The historical course of the Mahananda river, over which only a small part of the river water flows today, leads through the city of Malda (today: English Bazar ) and crosses the border to Bangladesh. The confluence with the Ganges (also called Padma here ) is in the Nawabganj district above Godagari .
