English Bazar ( Bengali : ইংলিশ বাজার ), also Malda , is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal with around 205,521 inhabitants (2011 census). The city is an association of the two independent communities English Bazar and Old Malda . The city is the headquarters of the Malda district .

English Bazar has a gender ratio of 924 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The city had a literacy rate of 86.46% in 2011 (men: 88.77%, women: 84.04%). Literacy is thus far above the national average and that of West Bengal. Almost 87.0% of the population are Hindus , approx. 11.0% are Muslims , approx. 0.3% are Christians , approx. 0.1% each are Jainas , Sikhs and Buddhists and approx. 1.5% gave none Religion or practiced other religions. 16.3% of the population are children under 6 years of age. Almost 29.7% of the population live in slums or slums.
Infrastructure
The Malda Airport in 1972 due to the Bangladesh war closed. Previously there were daily direct flights from Malda to Kolkata , Delhi and Guwahati . In 2014, the West Bengal government launched direct helicopter flights between Malda and Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. Currently (2019) it is being expanded again into a commercial airport.
There are four train stations serving the metropolis.
education
The city is the location of the University of Gour Banga, founded in 2008 . There are also many other schools and colleges in the city that specialize in various fields such as computer science, medicine or engineering.
health
English Bazar is a medical center in the region. With the Malda Medical College and Hospital , established in 2011, there is a modern hospital. There are many primary health centers in the city. Private nursing homes, a pathology center, clinics and medical shops are available.
