Mechinagar is a city in Nepal .

geography

Mechinagar is located in the Jhapa district in the far east of Nepal, near the border with the Indian states of West Bengal and Bihar .

The city was created in 1996 through the amalgamation of the main towns of Kakarbhitta (border crossing to India), Itabhatta and Dhulabari (the city's commercial and supply center) with a large number of villages and small settlements. In terms of nature, Mechinagar belongs to the Terai landscape , the lowest part of the Himalayan state belonging to the Ganges plain . The area is shaped by the border river Mechi . The city of Bhadrapur , 12 kilometers to the south, with the Chandragadhi airfield, is of great importance for the infrastructure and tourist development of the eastern Nepalese border region, from which Mechinagar also benefits. Mechinagar forms the eastern end point of the Mahendra Rajmarg highway . The urban area covers 55.72 km².

Residents

Mechinagar had 57,545 inhabitants (of which 27,588 male) in 13,181 households in the 2011 census.

history

The area on the eastern border of Nepal is located in a densely populated region of the country. However, the eastern region of Nepal has recently been severely affected by floods (for example in September 2008), and numerous places were wiped out during these natural disasters.

One of the most important refugee camps for the minorities expelled from the southern provinces of the neighboring country of Bhutan has been in the vicinity of the city of Kakadvitta since 1991 . The situation of these refugees is assessed by the UNHCR as dramatic, there was a sit-in at the Mechin Bridge in the no man's land between Nepal and India and riots with at least two dead. In the meantime, 20,000 people have been relocated to other Asian countries through an aid program of the UNHCR.
