history

Mosque in Bardia

In ancient times, Bardia was called Petra Megala and even then it was on the border between Libyan Marmarica and Egypt.

In both world wars, Bardia was of strategic importance: During the First World War , German submarines landed here several times to support the rebellious Senussi in their fight against British and Italian colonial powers.

During the Second World War , Bardia was a theater of war . Italian troops under the command of General Annibale Bergonzoli fought with British units . Ownership changed several times during the war until Bardia was finally taken by the British in 1942.
