al-Butnan , Arabic البطنان, DMG al-Buṭnān , is a municipality located in the northeast of the Mediterranean coast of Libya . It borders Egypt to the east . The capital of the municipality is Tobruk .
geography
In the entire area of al-Butnan, 144,527 people lived in 2003, 84 percent of them (121,052 inhabitants, as of 2005) in the capital Tobruk (طبرق). The municipality covers an area of 83,860 km² and, like most of Libya, consists of desert. al-Butnan borders the Mediterranean Sea and the following municipalities:
- Darna - northwest
- Munizip al-Wahat - West
- Munizip al-Kufra - South
In the east, al-Butnan borders the Egyptian ( Matruh Governorate ).
Important places besides Tobruk are Bardia and Jarabub (al Jaghbub).
history
al-Butnan and especially the capital Tobruq played an important role for the colonial power Italy in World War II .
