history

Until 2007, the municipality consisted essentially of the city of Misrata and its surrounding area, before it was merged with the municipality of Bani Walid to form the new municipality of Misrata and was given areas in the east by the municipality of Surt. In 2003 the smaller municipality comprised 360,521 people and 2,770 km². In the north, the former municipality bordered the Mediterranean Sea; in the countryside it bordered the municipalities of Surt in the south, Bani Walid in the southwest, Tarhuna wa-Msalata in the west and Tajura 'wa-n-Nawahi al-Arbaʿ in the northwest
