history

Until 2007, the municipality consisted essentially of the city of Darna and its surrounding area, before it was merged with the municipality of al-Quba to form the new municipality of Darna. In 2003 the smaller municipality comprised 81,174 people and 4,908 km². In the north, the former municipality bordered the Mediterranean Sea, on the land side it bordered the municipalities al-Quba and al-Butnan in the southeast.
