Benghazi , other spelling Benghazi , Arabic بنغازي, DMG Banġāzī , is a municipality of the Libyan Arab Republic and is located in Cyrenaica , a region in the northeast of the country, on the Mediterranean coast. The capital of the municipality is the city of the same name, Benghazi .
In 2003, 636,992 people lived in the entire Benghazi area. The municipality at that time only covered an area of 800 km², thus essentially corresponding to the city of Benghazi, and bordered only on the municipality of al-Hizam al-Achdar apart from the Mediterranean Sea . During the administrative reform in 2007, the small municipality of Benghazi was merged with the aforementioned.
