Surt (or Sirte , Arabic سرت, DMG Surt ) is a municipality located in the central north of the Libyan Arab Republic on the Gulf of Sidra . The capital of the municipality is the city of the same name, Surt .

In the entire area of Surt in 2003 about 156,389 people lived on an area of then 77,660 km². In 2006 there were 141,378. In the north the municipality borders on the Mediterranean Sea, in the countryside it borders on the following municipalities:
- Munizip al-Wahat - East
- Al-Jufra Municipality - South
- Munizip al-Jabal al-Gharbi - West
- Misrata Municipality - Northwest
Administrative history
In the course of the Libyan administrative reform in 2007, the limits of the municipality were corrected.
