Dharan ( Hindi : धरान Dharān ) is the third largest city in eastern Nepal ( Sunsari district ) on the edge of the Terai Plain at the foot of the Himalayas at an altitude of 132 to 562  m .

Dharan has had the 2nd order town charter since 2014 . As part of the 2014 community reform, the neighboring Village Development Committees (VDCs) Bishnupaduka and Panchakanya were incorporated into the city. As a result, the urban area grew from 103.4 km² to 192.5 km².

Dharan is the home of the Kirant ( Rai and Limbu ) people. Furthermore, Newars , Brahmins , Chhetris , Tamang and other ethnic groups can be found here. Therefore there is a variety of languages ​​and dialects here.

From 1953 to the 1990s there was a British Gurkha muster station on site .

Residents

At the 2011 census, Dharan had 116,181 inhabitants (54,599 of them male) in 27,750 households. With the incorporated VDCs, the population increased to 137,705 (64,671 of them male) in 32,693 households.
