Chhetri

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Chhetri , Kshetri , Kshetry , Kshetriya are a Hindu caste in Nepal and India . They correspond to the Indian Kshatriya , the warrior caste. Along with the Brahmins , the Chhetri are at the head of the Nepalese caste society. They are common all over Nepal and almost exclusively Hindus . There are no official figures as the Nepalese census does not record the caste. The Chhetris are the descendants of the former Nepalese royal family and the Nepalese nobility.

According to the Nepalese code of law "Muluki Ain" of 1854, the Kshetris are considered to be "twice-born" ( dvija ) Hindus and therefore wear the sacred cord .
