Lokendra Bahadur Chand

Lokendra Bahadur Chand ( Nepali लोकेन्द्र बहादुर चन्द ; born February 15, 1940 in Kurkutia, Baitadi District , Nepal ) is a Nepalese politician who was initially independent and who later joined the Rastriya Prajatantra party and from 1983 to 1986, 1990, 1997 and most recently between Was Prime Minister of Nepal four times in 2002 and 2003 .

Life

Chand took over as the successor to Surya Bahadur Thapa on July 12, 1983 for the first time as Prime Minister of Nepal and held this until March 21, 1986, after which Nagendra Prasad Rijal was acting successor. On April 6, 1990, he replaced Marich Man Singh Shrestha and took over the post of Prime Minister for the second time. Only 13 days later, however, on April 19, 1990, he was replaced by Krishna Prasad Bhattarai from the Nepalese Congress Party .

On March 6, 1997 Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba resigned after he had put the vote of confidence in the House of Representatives of the Kingdom of Nepal (Pratinidhi Sabha) , but had only received 101 instead of the at least 103 necessary votes of the 205-member parliament. On March 10, 2003, King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev appointed Chand as the new Prime Minister, who was then sworn in on March 12, 1997. Chand then formed his third cabinet, which included Bamdev Gautam as deputy prime minister and interior minister and Rabindra Nath Sharma as foreign and defense minister, while he himself also took on the post of defense minister. On March 19, 1997, he won a vote of confidence in the House of Representatives with 113 votes and reshuffled his cabinet on March 24, after which Prakash Chandra Lohani became the new foreign minister. He resigned on October 4, 1997 after the House of Representatives cast 107 to 94 votes against him . Subsequently, on October 7, 1997, Surya Bahadur Thapa was sworn in as the new Prime Minister and took over 17 ministerial offices himself, while Finance Minister Rabindra Nath Sharma and the previous Foreign Minister Kamal Thapa retained their offices. On October 9, 1997, Thapa won a vote of confidence in the House of Representatives with 109 votes.

King Gyanendra dismissed Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba on October 4, 2002 , dissolved the Council of Ministers and temporarily assumed executive power himself. A week later, on October 11, 2002, the king appointed Chand, who was now a member of the Rastriya Prajatantra party , Prime Minister for the fourth time. Chand took on 13 ministerial posts including Minister of Defense himself, while Narendra Bikram Shah became Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badri Prasad Shrestha Minister of Finance and Dharma Bahadur Thapa Minister of Interior. On May 30, 2003, he resigned as Prime Minister and continued the official business until May 5, 2003, whereupon his party friend Surya Bahadur Thapa took over the position.
