Matrika Prasad Koirala ( Nepali मातृका प्रसाद कोइराला ; born January 1, 1912 in Benares , India , † September 11, 1997 in Kathmandu ) was a Nepalese politician and brother of the Nepalese Prime Ministers Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala and Girija Prasad Koirala .

Life

Similar to his brothers Koirala began his political career in the Indian Congress Party ; In 1930 he was temporarily imprisoned as an independence fighter. In Nepal he led the Nepalese Congress Party founded by his brother Bishweshwar from 1950 to 1952 .

In November 1951 Koirala became Prime Minister, the first after the end of the Rana rule he opposed , and also took over the post of Foreign Minister (until 1952). From June 1953 to April 1955 Koirala held office again as head of government.

In 1953 he founded the Janata Party ( Rastriya Janata Parishad ), of which he remained chairman until his death in 1997.
