Jhala Nath Khanal ( Nepali झलनाथ खनाल ; born May 20, 1950 in Sakhejung , Ilam District ) is a Nepalese politician of the Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist-Leninists) (CPN-UML). He was Prime Minister of Nepal from February to August 2011 .

Life

Khanal was initially a member of the Communist Party of Nepal (Marxist-Leninists) and its general secretary between 1982 and 1986. He later became a member of the CPN-UML and was its candidate for the election to the Constituent Assembly of Nepal in 2008 as its candidate for MP for the constituency Ilim-1 elected.

During this time he was Secretary General of the CPN-UML from 2008 to February 2009 before becoming chairman of the party on February 16, 2009. At the same time he was chairman of the CPN-UML group in the Constituent Assembly and at times also Minister for Information and Communication.

On February 3, 2011, after a seven-month vacancy, he was elected the new Prime Minister of Nepal by the Constituent Assembly and thus succeeded Madhav Kumar Nepal , who was forced to resign from the post of Prime Minister on June 30, 2010. After his efforts to draft a new constitution failed, he resigned from office in August 2011.
