Girija Prasad Koirala (born February 20, 1925 in Tadi ( Saharsa District ), Bihar , India ; † March 20, 2010 in Kathmandu ) was a Nepalese politician and multiple prime minister and from January 2007 to July 2008 also acting head of state of his country. He was the youngest son of Krishna Prasad Koirala and Divya Koirala , and brother of the former Nepalese Prime Ministers Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala and Matrika Prasad Koirala and the cousin of the former Nepalese Prime Minister Man Mohan Adhikari .

Life

Koirala began his political career in 1947 as a union leader; he was also involved in the Nepalese Congress Party (NCP) founded by his brother Bishweshwar . Because of his critical attitude towards the absolute monarchy in Nepal, he was temporarily imprisoned.

After the Congress Party's election victory in May 1991, Koirala was elected Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of his country for the first time and remained in office until November 1994. From April 1998 to May 1999 he was again Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, from March 2000 to June 2001 Prime Minister and Defense Minister. Koirala has been chairman of the Congress party since 1996.

On April 30, 2006, Koirala was sworn in as Prime Minister of Nepal for the fourth time after weeks of unrest by the parliament, which had convened for the first time in four years. He was able to end the 12-year civil war of the Maoists and on November 21, 2006 signed a corresponding agreement with the Maoist leader Prachanda .

Following the defeat of the Congress party in the constituent assembly elections in April 2008 and the proclamation of the republic on May 28, 2008, Koirala initially refused to hand over power to the Maoists. After the failure of the formation of a coalition between the NCP and the Maoists, Koirala announced his resignation as prime minister on June 26, 2008. On August 15, 2008, he finally gave the office to Pushpa Kamal Dahal .

After King Gyanendra's suspension on January 15, 2007, Koirala also assumed the powers of a head of state as Prime Minister until the proclamation of the Republic on May 28, 2008. On July 23, 2008, he handed it over to the first President of the Republic of Nepal, Ram Baran Yadav , who was elected on the same day . He was replaced as Prime Minister on August 15, 2008 by Pushpa Kamal Dahal .
