biography

Ram Baran Yadav was born as a member of the Madhesi in the village of Sapahi in the southern Nepalese district of Dhanusha near the Indian border. He studied medicine in Kolkata , India , did his doctorate in Chandigarh and practiced as a surgeon in Janakpur .

Yadav has been politically active since the 1960s and campaigned for the re-establishment of the multi-party system in Nepal in the late 1980s. After the first democratic elections in 1991, Yadav became Minister of State for Health as a member of the ruling Nepalese Congress Party . Supported by the chairman of the Congress Party, Girija Prasad Koirala , Yadav was appointed Minister of Health in 1999.

Since 2006, Yadav has served as General Secretary of the Congress Party. In the April 2008 Constituent Assembly elections, Yadav was elected MP for Dhanusha.

Presidential election

After the proclamation of the Republic of Nepal on May 28, 2008, the election of a new head of state was delayed. The two largest parties, former Prime Minister Koirala's Congress party and the Maoists , which emerged as the strongest party in the Constituent Assembly elections, could not agree on the formation of a joint government. When Koirala then announced his resignation, the parties failed to find common candidates for the government. The Constituent Assembly decided in July 2008 that the President and Prime Minister would be elected by the assembly by simple majority.

As a candidate for the Congress Party, Yadav ran against the Maoist-nominated anti-royalist Ram Raja Prasad Singh and the communist candidate Ramprit Paswan in the presidential election on July 19, 2008. In the first ballot, Yadav narrowly missed the necessary absolute majority of the votes and won 13 votes more than the favored Singh.

For the second ballot on July 21, the Congress Party secured the support of smaller democratic parties. Yadav then won the runoff election against Singh with 308 of 590 votes.

Yadav was sworn in on July 23, 2008 together with his deputy Paramananda Jha in the presidential palace. As president, Yadav performed mainly representative functions.
