Bidhya Devi Bhandari ( Nepali विद्या देवी भण्डारी ; born June 19, 1961 in Guranse, VDC Mane Bhanjyang, Bhojpur District ) is a Nepalese politician . On October 28, 2015, she was elected President of Parliament by parliament.

Political career

Bhandari was born in Guranse in 1961. At the age of 17 she joined the Youth League of CPN (ML), the youth organization of the Communist Party. Two years later she joined the party herself. During her studies at Tribhuvan University she worked as treasurer of the left-wing student association "Federation of Students' Union". After graduation, she worked for the General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions , where she held the position of chairman of the women's organization. In 1997 she was elected to the Central Committee of the CPN-UML , of which she later became Vice-President. In this role she campaigned for the abolition of the monarchy. After the proclamation of the republic, she worked as Defense Minister under Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal from 2009 to 2011 .

In the 2015 presidential election, she prevailed against her rival Onsari Gharti Magar with 327 to 214 votes. She was sworn in on October 29, 2015 and took office as the successor to Ram Baran Yadav . She resigned her functions in the party and the seat in parliament after the election as president. She is the first woman in this position in the history of Nepal . She is the widow of Madan Kumar Bhandari .

As a politician, Bhandari is particularly committed to women's rights and has, among other things, achieved a women's quota of 33% in parliament. However, critics accuse her of violating women's rights in other cases. She voted for a bill that provides that children of single mothers or children of Nepalese mothers and foreign fathers are not entitled to Nepalese citizenship. This is perceived as discriminatory in particular because the children of Nepalese men receive Nepalese citizenship regardless of the living conditions of their fathers.
