Nordin ben Salah (born May 18, 1972 in M'Tioua , Morocco , † September 20, 2004 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch boxing world champion.
Career
Ben Salah began his career as a kickboxer at the age of 15 . In the course of his success he was nicknamed Fighting Nordin . In 1993 he became European champion in kickboxing in Finland. After he also won the world title in 1994, he switched to classic boxing.
In his first official fight on May 28, 1994, ben Salah won without much effort in the first round by knocking out the Hungarian Laszlo Jacobs . On May 8, 1999, he first won the world title in super middleweight according to the version of the WBU by winning points against the German Norbert Nieroba . When some traces of ephedrine were found in his urine after the fight during the doping control , he immediately lost the title.
On March 16, 2002, he won the WBA intercontinental title in the super middleweight division in Magdeburg by winning points over 12 rounds against Sidney Mxoli Msutu from South Africa. In March 2003 ben Salah lost the title after a knockout defeat to the Argentine Francisco Antonio Mora . In the rematch six months later in Erfurt , he got it back.
After this victory, ben Salah resigned from boxing. Of the 39 fights in his career, he won 36, including 26 by knockout blow.
In 2004 he worked in the feature film Shouf Shouf Habibi! - Take a look at the life of the Dutch director Albert ter Heerdt .
On the evening of September 20, 2004, ben Salah was gunned down in the street while leaving his training hall. Several shots were fired at him from a passing motorcycle. Ben Salah succumbed to serious injuries in the hospital shortly afterwards. He leaves behind a friend and son.
