Airport train stations are train stations that connect an airport to the general rail network and thus enable intermodality .
Europe
Germany
In Germany , the connection to the general route network takes place in most cases via the S-Bahn , in some cases also via the long-distance network of Deutsche Bahn . The DR's first airport station was the station at Berlin-Schönefeld Airport , which opened in 1962 , and the DB's first airport station was the station at Frankfurt am Main Airport , which opened in 1972 (today the regional station).
In addition to passengers, individual airports are also approached by freight trains. This takes place in Germany at four airports where kerosene or air freight is approached and departed by freight trains.

The Frankfurt airport train station had a special connection: It was served by the Lufthansa Airport Express from March 27, 1983 to May 23, 1993 , which initially connected it with Düsseldorf and later with Stuttgart. From 1983 to 1993, the airport terminal station in Düsseldorf was its northern terminus.
