Torino Stura train station

The Servizio ferroviario metropolitano di Torino (SFMT) is a S-Bahn -like local transport system in the northern Italian city of Turin .

history

Plans for a comprehensive reorganization of the Turin railway junction have been in existence since 1979. In 1987, construction began on the underground connecting line ( passante ferroviario) between the Torino Stura stations in the north (on the Turin – Milan railway line ) and Torino Lingotto in the south. The completion of the Passante ferroviario was the essential prerequisite for the planned construction of a local train system similar to that of the S-Bahn. This project was initiated by the Piedmont region and presented in 1999. In 2005, the regional government entrusted the implementation to the consortium Agenzia per la Mobilita Metropolitana , in which the province of Turin , the city of Turin and some surrounding municipalities are also involved. On December 4, 2012, the Servizio ferroviario metropolitano di Torino was officially presented in the Mole Antonelliana . The first five lines of the SFMT began regular operations on December 9th.

Line network

The SFMT currently comprises a total of eight lines:

The line network has a trunk route between Torino Stura in the north and Trofarello in the south. With the exception of lines A, B and 3, all lines run on the main route. Lines 4, 6 and 7 end in Torino Stura . Line A serves, among other things, Turin Airport near Caselle Torinese . It ends at Torino Dora station , but is to be connected to the main line and thus to the rest of the SFMT network by 2018 (as the new line 4 Ceres – Bra ). Line 3 ends at Porta Nuova station , but it should also be connected to the main line by 2018 and then run to Turin-Caselle airport ( Porta Nuova has an underground station). Line 5, which is still missing, between Orbassano in the south-west and Chivasso in the north-east is also due to go into operation by 2018 .
