The Torino Porta Nuova train station in Turin is the third largest train station in Italy with 350 train journeys daily and over 70 million travelers after Roma Termini and Milano Centrale . It is operated by the FS subsidiary GrandiStazioni SpA, but lost its main station function with the opening of the Porta Susa AV station in 2013, as it is not a terminus, unlike Porta Nuova.

history

The groundbreaking ceremony for the building according to plans by the architect Carlo Ceppi took place in 1861. It was handed over to the company in 1864, although work was still in progress until 1868. After the destruction in World War II , the reconstruction took place from 1948 to 1953 under the supervision of Paolo Perilli . In 2007 the Turin metro opened a stop in the basement. After extensive renovations, the station was re-inaugurated on February 4, 2009, just 145 years after it was first opened. 97,000 square meters of usable area were renovated or created on four floors.
