The Modane – Turin railway , also known as the Frejus Railway , is an international railway that connects the Italian city of Turin with France and is continued on the French side by the Maurienne line . The Frejus Railway crosses under the Alps with the Mont-Cenis-Tunnel , the oldest tunnel through the main Alpine ridge.

The line consists of the Turin – Bussoleno valley section , which was built in 1854 as part of the line to Susa , and the Bussoleno – Modane mountain line , which was opened in 1871 together with the Mont Cenis tunnel.

The Frejus Railway was electrified with three-phase alternating current from 1912 to 1920 and converted to 3 kV direct current in 1961 .

The Italian railway company Trenitalia offers the regional trains of line 3 of the Turin SFM to Bardonecchia . Since September 10, 2017, seven regional train pairs have been running every two hours from Turin to Modane on Sundays.

In the medium term, there are plans to build a new base tunnel 52 kilometers in length for long-distance traffic, which is highly controversial.
