Hans-Rudolf Lutz

Hans-Rudolf Lutz (born January 14, 1939 in Zurich ; † January 17, 1998 there ) was a Swiss typographer and graphic artist .

life and work

Hans-Rudolf Lutz grew up in the Schwamendingen district of Zurich . From 1955 to 1959 he completed an apprenticeship as a typesetter at Orell Füssli . In 1963 he attended a year-long typographic design course with Emil Ruder and Robert Büchler at the Basel School of Design . In 1964 Lutz began to work for Albert Hollenstein in Paris. At Studio Hollenstein he became head of the group «expression typographique», which had the task of exploring and promoting the typographical possibilities of the then new typesetting . In 1966 he accepted a position as a subject teacher for typesetting at the School of Design in Zurich. 1968 followed a position as a teacher for typography and interdisciplinary design in Lucerne. In 1971 Lutz helped set up the F + F school for experimental design in Zurich.

Lutz had had his own studio in Zurich since 1966. From 1968 to 1980 he designed the books for the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture at the ETH Zurich . He was also the author, editor and publisher of numerous publications. With a book series, Lutz broke through the boycott against the Marxist art historian Konrad Farner in 1969 after 15 years . As a visual designer, Lutz was also part of the music group UnknownmiX between 1983 and 1994 around the singer Magda Vogel and the composer / electronics engineer Ernst Thoma .

Lutz was married to the graphic designer Tania Prill .
