Train

The Servizio ferroviario metropolitano di Palermo (Italian, Urban Rail Traffic Palermo ) is an urban rail system operated by Trenitalia in the Palermo agglomeration .

history

Urban rail traffic was opened in 1990 on the occasion of the soccer world championship . The line used the railroad Palermo Trapani from Palermo Centrale Train Station to the station Palermo Notarbartolo and the port railway between Notarbartolo and Giachery. Four new stops were built on the route, Vespri , Imperatore Federico , Fiera , and the terminus Giachery .

In November 1992 the branch line via San Lorenzo-Colli to Tommaso Natale was integrated into the system. In 1994, the Francia and Cardillo-Zen stops were opened.

In 2001, after a long construction period, the Palazzo Reale-Orleans tunnel station was opened, which is located in the city center and is therefore very popular.

In the same year the system was extended to Palermo-Punta Raisi Airport , where a new airport station was built. Due to major expansion work, the railway line between Notarbartolo and Punta Raisi (airport) was closed from June 29, 2015 to October 6, 2018.
