The Caltagirone – Gela section was planned as a narrow-gauge railway in 1911 , but was never built. It was planned again after the Second World War to develop the industrial town of Gela with standard gauge and finally opened in 1979. Since May 8, 2011, all rail traffic between Caltagirone and Gela has been suspended due to a bridge collapse of the Ponte di Piano Carbone in kilometer 326.6 between Piano Carbone and Niscemi . Passenger traffic on this section of the route is carried out with a replacement rail service . On October 7, 2014, the remains of the collapsed bridge were blown up. A resumption of continuous train traffic with the construction of the bridge is planned.
