The Palermo – Trapani railway is a railway line in Sicily that connects the capital Palermo with the cities of Mazara del Vallo , Marsala and Trapani on the west coast .

The line was opened and operated from 1880-81 by the Società della Ferrovia Sicula Occidentale (FSO). For this reason, it did not start in the Palermo Centrale railway station , but in a smaller own station ( Palermo Lolli ).

history

July 10, 1880 Castelvetrano - Trapani
0March 1, 1881 Partinico - Castellammare del Golfo
0June 5, 1881 Castellammare del Golfo – Castelvetrano
0June 1, 1956 Palermo Lolli – Palermo Marittima

Only in 1907, with the takeover of FSO by Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), did the trains on the route depart from Palermo Centrale station. In 1937 the Alcamo Diramazione – Trapani railway was opened, providing a faster and more direct connection, but the old railway remained important for local traffic.

In 1974 the passage through the city of Palermo was moved underground, so the old Lolli station was closed and replaced by a new station ( Palermo Notarbartolo ). In 1990 and 1994, S-Bahn-like traffic ( Servizio ferroviario metropolitano di Palermo ) was introduced on the stretch in the city of Palermo . On the branch line from Palermo-Notabartolo to Giachery, passenger traffic was started in 1991, in 2001 the section Palermo-Piraineto was electrified and an electrified branch line from Piraineto to Palermo-Punta Raisi airport was built. Since 2011, this section of the line has been expanded to two tracks. The double-track expansion should be completed in 2020.
