The railway Alcamo-Trapani is an abbreviation for about Castelvetrano leading railway Palermo Trapani in the northwest of Sicily . It has due to unfavorable topographic a variety of conditions engineering structures on. The former main line opened in 1880, but was far from the air line . It was not until September 15, 1937 that the Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) opened the route through the hill country. Due to the abbreviation, the old route was limited to the use of local trains . A few kilometers before Trapani , both routes come together again when coming from the south. Over a long distance, the A29 autostrada runs parallel to the railway line. In 1953 an express train needed more than two hours for the old route and around 50 minutes for the new route. Today the journey time is 45 minutes.

Bridge between Alcamo and Calatafimi

In recent years, the route has been partially renovated with EU funding and is now in the best condition since it was founded. At the same time, less frequented stops were closed, which both reduced costs and increased travel speed. The use of new traction vehicles has increased the acceptance and thus the profitability of the routes - as everywhere in Sicily. Currently (2012) trains on this route only stop at Calatafimi and Segesta Tempio stations.

Coming from Alcamo you first reach the Calatafimi station, which was very generously dimensioned during construction, as the Ferrovia Salemi-Kaggera small train was supposed to branch off here to the south, which via Calatafimi (city), Vita and Salemi (city) to Salemi station (today Salemi -Gibellina ), which is back on the old FS route. This small train was built, but never put into operation.

The nearest train station is Segesta Tempio. It lies behind the Monte Barbaro , through which the route leads with a tunnel. There is never finished, but very well-preserved Elymians - Temple of Segesta and the theater of Segesta. The train station is about one and a half kilometers from the Segesta archaeological site .

On February 25, 2013, regular operations on this route were discontinued after a landslide as a result of storms and have not been resumed since (as of August 2016). The project to restore the line was completed on February 13, 2019 and presented to the public works council. The tender is expected to start in the first quarter of 2020, subject to a validation review and the convening of the services conference. The line is expected to reopen in 2024.
