The Noto – Pachino railway was a single-track line in the extreme south-east of Sicily . The route led from Noto to the southernmost railway station in Italy , Pachino, 27 km away . The line was in operation from 1935 to 1985. It was officially discontinued in 2002.

history

After the opening of the line from Syracuse to Noto in 1886 there was a call to connect the extreme south-east of Sicily to the rail network. After decades of discussion, the line was opened on April 28, 1935. The line was operated by the FS .

While freight transport was initially handled by steam locomotives , diesel multiple units were used for passenger transport from the start . The route was badly damaged in the Second World War , but reopened after the war.

From October 16, 1951 to March 1, 1955, the line was interrupted again due to damage after a flood. In the post-war period it was primarily used to transport wine. However, the operation was always uneconomical and the route was therefore threatened with closure.

Operations ceased on January 1, 1986. The track remained in the official course book mentioned the FS. The official cessation of operations took place in 2002.
