Marzamemi

Marzamemi is a district ( fraction ) of the municipality of Pachino in the Italian region of Sicily . Pachino belongs to the Syracuse Free Community Consortium and is located on the southern tip of Sicily. Marzamemi is located about five kilometers northeast of Pachino directly on the sea. Fishing and fish processing are important sources of income . In addition, tourism is gaining in importance. Marzamemi was connected to Pachino, Noto and Syracuse by the Noto – Pachino railway until 1985 .

Attractions

In the center of the former fishing village there is an old tonnara (tuna factory), an old and a new church, both of which are consecrated to the patron saint Francis of Assisi , and the Palazzo del Principe di Villadorata, built in 1752. The nearby nature reserve Riserva naturale Oasi is also worth seeing faunistica di Vendicari .

Festival del Cinema di Frontiera

In 1994, Klaus Maria Brandauer filmed Mario and the Magician in Marzamemi based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Mann .

Since 2000 the film festival Festival del Cinema di Frontiera (Cinema of Borders) has been held at the end of July with the aim of crossing borders and providing insight into other cultures. The films are shown on the main square, admission is free.
