action

In the late 1920s, the German writer Bernhard Fuhrmann and his family took a summer vacation in the (fictional) Italian resort of Torre di Venere. At the time of the emerging fascism , however, a few irritations made the vacation more difficult: First, the head waiter of the grand hotel forbade the family to eat on the terrace, as it was reserved for the upper clientele. Then the police chief of Torre punishes them because the little daughter was seen naked on the beach for a short time when she rinsed her bathing suit in the sea. Last but not least, the hotel manager's body is found; alleged suicide is the result. Despite the wife's request to leave, the family decides to stay another day as the show of the magician Cipolla is announced. Cipolla turns out to be a diabolical figure with a distinctive but ugly appearance, who has amazing hypnotic abilities and knows how to use them virtuously against his audience. For example, it makes a spectator freeze like a board in order to be able to use it as a bench. When Cipolla finally reaches a sensational climax and forces young Silvestra to kiss him by tricking her into believing that she loves him (instead of the young assistant waiter Mario), the situation escalates: awakening from the hypnosis, Silvestra realizes the humiliation and tries to give Cipolla shoot. However, the bullet misses its target and unfortunately hits Mario, who dies from his gunshot wound.

Differences to the literary original

The film version uses its template very freely, so that some clear differences between film and book can be seen:

  • There is no mention of the competition between local waiters in balancing spaghetti.
  • The suicide of the hotel manager is also an invention of the film.
  • The magician is kissed by Silvestra at the end, not, as in the story, by Mario.
  • While in Thomas Mann's novella Cipolla is shot by Mario at the end, in the film it is Silvestra who wants to shoot the magician, but meets Mario in the process.
  • In the film, Silvestra is the daughter of the pension landlady Angiolieri, but this relationship is not mentioned in the book.
  • The novella is told from the first person's perspective and his family remains nameless, in the film it is given the name Fuhrmann.
  • Father Fuhrmann shows a critical attitude towards the political situation in the film, while he plays a more passive role in the book.
