Wilhelm Wloch

Wilhelm Wloch (born February 3, 1897 in Berlin ; † October 21, 1939 ) was a German communist who was a victim of the Stalin purges .

Life

Wloch was born in Berlin on February 13, 1897, the son of a metalworker. He did an apprenticeship in engraving and then became a metal worker. In 1911 he became a member of the Workers' Youth and in 1915 the SPD . After serving at the front in 1916, he worked as a metal worker in the armaments industry. In 1917 Wloch joined the USPD . After participating in the January strike in 1917, he was drafted again and served on the German-Russian front. In 1918 he was active in the soldiers' council , in 1919 he participated in the January fighting in Berlin. In 1920 he became a member of the KPD and its district councilor in Berlin-Treptow.

From the mid-twenties Wloch was officially in the Soviet trade representation busy while in reality it for the intelligence of the Comintern worked. After serving in China, he went to the Soviet Union in 1935. On July 27, 1937, he was arrested by the NKVD and sentenced to 20 years in a camp on April 4, 1939. According to Soviet sources, he is said to have died of heart failure while being transported to another gulag on October 21, 1939. Wloch's family was then deported to Germany. His widow Erna was under Gestapo supervision, his son Lothar Wloch was drafted into the armed forces. The daughter Margot was sent to a re-education camp, after the war she married Kurt Julius Goldstein .

Wloch's younger brother Karl Wloch became a high-ranking functionary in the GDR.
