In the extreme west of Sicily , two single-track railway lines end at the Trapani terminus , both of which have their origins in Palermo: first, the Palermo – Trapani railway via Castelvetrano, opened in 1881, and the second, the 53 km long branch line Alcamo Diramazione – Trapani via Segesta , which was only completed in 1937 Connection between the two cities of Palermo – Trapani shortened by a good 60 km. Trapani has no other train stations apart from this terminus. It is operated by the state-run Rete Ferroviaria Italiana . The train station is in the center of the city; the square in front of the station forms the piazza Umberto I. From there, the city center and the harbor can be reached in a few minutes on foot. There are 22 train arrivals and departures each working day.

Railway building

The platform of track 3 and 4, behind it the three more "old" tracks and a siding that ends on the eastern gable end of the goods shed.

The neoclassical , two-story main building has a slightly protruding, five-axis front on its front side, with three additional axes to the north and south . The building sides are biaxial. The two outer arches of the central five axes of the main building had passages to the inside of the building. Today only the northernmost of the two is intended for this. The gable is crowned centrally by a clock at the level of the surrounding balustrade.

Running towards this main building are four railway tracks, the two of which had outer platforms. The space between the track ends and the building is designed with a park-like green area and tall old trees. The southernmost of these four tracks has an older freight hall lying parallel to it, the existence of which does not indicate passenger traffic on this track. The most northerly of the four tracks is now designated as track 4 , which is followed further north by three more designated and operational tracks (1-3).

This main building, which is stretched in a north-south direction, is adjoined by two side aisles in the same architectural style , which consist of three three-axis, alternately offset building sections. There is also access to the tracks from these two sides. The north wing is followed by another part made of five axes, again rotated at a 90 ° angle.

Railway area

The railway area includes extensive track systems, some of which are no longer used today. This includes a turntable and some sidings that were previously used for vehicle maintenance near Via Vespiri on the northern edge, as well as several freight tracks and a connecting track to the port on the southern edge of the railway site. The railway site is geographically delimited to the east by a level crossing over Via Capitano Salvatore Bruno, which turns into Via Alberto Tipa. From here on, the two main tracks run parallel for about two kilometers without any further switches before they separate to the east and south.
