The Oreto (in Arabic sources Wādī al-ʿAbbās , in Latin as flumen Abbes ) is a river in Sicily that flows through the valley of the same name, which extends over the municipalities of Altofonte , Monreale and Palermo .

Properties and course

The Oreto is about 22 kilometers long, has its source south of Palermo and runs through the Conca d'Oro along the ridge of Monte Matassaro Renna . Then it flows towards the southern outskirts of the Sicilian capital, where it finally flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea . The estuary can be seen from the promenade of Porto di Sant'Erasmo . The watercourse has a raging nature and always carries water even in the hottest months, which is due to the many springs along its course and the abundance of groundwater in this area. 1997, the year with the most recent figures available, the river's average monthly flow ranged from a maximum of 1.87 cubic meters per second in January to a minimum of 0.116 cubic meters per second in August . The Oreto receives most of its water from its large tributaries, the Torrente dei Greci , the Vallone Piano di Maglio and the Vallone della Monaca , as well as its main sources, Api , Alloro a Vigna d'Api , Villa Renda , Santa Maria and Fontana del Lupo .

Several bridges were built along the river in the 16th century , including the Ponte delle Teste Mozze on the Corso dei Mille . Nearby, the medieval Ponte dell'Ammiraglio from the 12th century spanned a tributary of the river.

In the Fondo Ambiente Italiano (FAI) campaign I luoghi del cuore in 2018 , the Oreto came second with 83,138 votes.
