history
The first airport on the site was established as Hamilton Airport in 1920 by businessman Thomas Hamilton . On October 19, 1926, Milwaukee County took over Hamilton Airport and renamed it Milwaukee County Airport . After passenger traffic across Lake Michigan had been offered since 1929 , a station building was built in 1940. In honor of General Billy Mitchell , the airport was renamed again on March 17, 1941, this time General Mitchell Field .
The United States Department of War rented General Mitchell Field from January 1945 and used it as a prisoner of war camp with up to 3,000 inmates.
The current terminal was inaugurated in 1955 and significantly expanded in 1984 and 1990.
From 1986 to 2019 the airport was named General Mitchell International Airport . The airport was given its current name Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport in February 2019.
business
Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is connected to the American aviation hubs . There are also direct connections to North American destinations. From 1984 to 2010 it was also the home base of Midwest Airlines , which connected Milwaukee with many major airports in the USA. After the merger with Frontier Airlines , the airport continued to be used as a hub. However, Frontier Airlines gradually reduced its presence at the airport until the hub was finally closed. AirTran Airways then expanded its hub in Milwaukee and Southwest Airlines , which took over AirTran, plans to expand the base further (as of 2014).
Airlines and Destinations
In 2019, Southwest Airlines had the largest share of the passenger market, followed by Delta Air Lines .
