On September 6, 1985, a DC-9-14 took off from Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport with destination Hartsfield – Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Midwest Express Airlines Flight 105 . Just a minute later, the plane crashed. All 31 inmates died.

plane

The plane was a 17-year-old Douglas DC-9-14 with the air vehicle registration N100ME, which was equipped with two engines of the type Pratt & Whitney JT8D-7B.

course

At 3:20:28 p.m., Flight 105 was cleared for take-off from runway 19R. According to the flight operations manual, the take-off was carried out with reduced thrust in order to reduce noise pollution on the ground and to extend the service life of the engine. The aircraft rotated after a distance of 4200  ft (1280  m ) and at a speed of 140  kn (260  km / h ). The DC-9 accelerated to 168 kn (310 km / h) and climbed at 3000 ft (910 m) per minute. At 3:21:26 p.m. at an altitude of 450 ft (140 m) there was a loud bang. When the captain asked the first officer what was going on, he did not answer. At 3:21:29 p.m., the air traffic controller instructed Flight 105 to turn left on course 175 ° and saw smoke and flames emerging from right engine No. 2. Once again, the first officer gave no answer to the master's question what was going on, but instead reported an emergency to the air traffic controller. Two seconds later the captain said "Here", to which the first officer did not answer either. The pilots did not say "full thrust" nor "prepare ignition - check fuel system" which is part of the checklist in the event of an engine failure at low speed. In the meantime, the aircraft turned from course 194 ° to course 260 ° within eight seconds. The acceleration first decreased to 0.3 g and then increased to 1.8 g . Then it came at a speed of 156  knots (290 km / h) to stall and the aircraft crashed. All 31 inmates died.

root cause

The cause of the crash was the bursting of the 9th and 10th compressor disks in the right engine, causing a fire in the right engine and causing it to fail. The pilots reacted incorrectly to this. The aircraft slowed down due to the engine failure, and due to the right turn from course 194 ° to course 260 ° and the resulting lateral acceleration, the stall speed also increased , which ultimately led to a stall and crash.
