The Tōkyō Monorail ( Japanese 東京 モ ノ レ ー ル , Tōkyō Monorēru ) is a monorail line that runs between Hamamatsuchō in Minato District , Tokyo and Haneda Airport . The route was operated by the Tōkyō Monorail KK ( 東京 モ ノ レ ー ル 株式会社 , Tōkyō Monorēru Kabushiki-gaisha , English Tokyo Monorail Co., Ltd. ). JR East acquired a large number of shares in the company in 2002 and now holds 70 percent of the shares. The remaining shares are divided between Hitachi (12 percent), Japan Airlines (9 percent) and All Nippon Airways (9 percent).

history

The elevated route along Tokyo Bay was opened in 1964 on the occasion of the 1964 Summer Olympics . The line was built by Hitachi Monorail System and is based on the ALWEG principle. Originally, the Tokyo Monorail ran without stopping between Hamamatsuchō and Haneda. The first station that was subsequently added to the route was the Ōi Keibajō-mae ( 大 井 競 馬 場 前 ) station in 1965 . In 1967 the Seibijō station followed ( 整 備 場 ).

When the monorail opened, the passenger terminal of Haneda Airport was south of Seibijō station at the western end of the airfield. As part of the expansion of the airport, a new terminal was opened in 1993 (Terminal 1) and the monorail was extended there. The former terminal building was demolished to allow runway B to be expanded. The tunnel in which the monorail originally headed for the terminal was consequently abandoned and returned to the Ministry of Transport. It is still located under runway B to this day (the tracks were removed and the tunnel mouth closed).

In 2004, the route was extended by another station to the new Terminal 2.

Today, the Tokyo Monorail operated with their vehicles daily between 5:30 and 24:00 nine stations with about 127,000 passengers . A ride from the airport to Hamamatsucho costs 500 yen. With this level of utilization, the Tokyo Monorail is considered to be the busiest and most economical monorail in the world. On January 24, 2007, the 1,500 millionth passenger was carried.

On October 21, 2010, another station was opened at the new International Terminal (now Terminal 3 ) at Haneda Airport, which was completed at that time .

Travel times

For the Hamamatsucho - Haneda Airport Terminal 3 route , the Haneda Express (without a stopover) takes around 13 minutes, the high-speed line (three stops) around 16 minutes and the local train (six stops and one overhaul by the express train) around 20 minutes. The travel times depend on the time of day and the traffic. During the day, all types of trains run every 12 minutes, so that a trip starts in Hamamatsucho every 4 minutes. The local train in Showajima is overtaken by the express train in both directions. 13 vehicles are required for this operation.
