Gustaf Wingren (born November 29, 1910 in Tryserum , Östergötland , † November 1, 2000 ) was a Swedish theologian .

Life

Wingren comes from a working-class family and grew up in the small Swedish industrial town of Valdemarsvik . He studied Protestant theology from 1929 and was shaped by meetings with representatives of the Confessing Church at a student conference in Berlin-Spandau in 1935/36 and by a semester abroad in Berlin (1938). In 1939 he was ordained and was able to write a dissertation on Martin Luther's doctrine of the profession on his first academic position at Lund University , on the basis of which he was awarded a Dr. theol. received his doctorate. After visiting professorships in 1947 at the universities of Åbo and Basel (substitute for Karl Barth ) and in 1950 at the University of Göttingen , he became professor of systematic theology at Lund University in 1951 . In addition to his teaching and guest lectures around the world, he preached regularly and gave devotions on the radio. In 1974 he gave up his office as pastor in protest because, in his opinion , the (Lutheran) Church of Sweden did not act energetically enough against the opponents of women's ordination . In 1977 he was retired, but remained active as a journalist.

Wingren was a member of the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches (WCC) for over two decades and also served on the Lutheran World Federation's Theological Study Commission .

In his inaugural lecture in 1951, Wingren, influenced by the "theology of the Lund School" ( Anders Nygren , Gustaf Aulén ), but also by his encounter with Karl Barth and the Confessing Church, spoke of his predecessor and sponsor Nygren and his motive research Come on. In a critical examination of the theologies of Nygren, Barth and Rudolf Bultmann , he developed an independent position based on Irenäus von Lyon and Martin Luther , the focus of which is on the first article of the Creed , i.e. the theology of creation .

Honors

The universities of Kiel , Rostock , St. Andrews , Oslo and Aarhus awarded Wingren an honorary doctorate .

In the Diocese of Linköping , from which Wingren came, the Gustaf Wingren Society ( Gustaf Wingren-sällskapet ) was founded in 1995 , which is dedicated to the publication of Wingren's works and the dissemination of his theology.
