Anders Theodor Samuel Nygren (born November 15, 1890 in Gothenburg , † October 20, 1978 in Lund ) was a Swedish Lutheran theologian and bishop .

Life

After studying theology at Lund University , Nygren was ordained pastor of the Church of Sweden in 1912 . His first parish office was in Ölmevalla (today the Kungsbacka parish ). A study trip to Germany in 1919/29, during which he had contact with Carl Stange and Ernst Troeltsch , served to deepen his interest in Immanuel Kant and Friedrich Schleiermacher . In 1921 he received his doctorate on Religious Apriori in Lund . After a few years as a lecturer, Anders Nygren was appointed professor of systematic theology (focus on ethics ) in 1924 . He was also a member of the cathedral chapter of the Lund diocese. During the years together with his faculty colleague Gustaf Aulén , Nygren founded the direction of a school in Lund , which was characterized by a philosophically trained approach to dogmatics from the history of ideas .

His main work Eros and Agape - published simultaneously in Sweden and Germany in two volumes in 1930 and 1937 - established the method of motivational research: Central Christian teachings, first of all love, were to be illuminated in comparison with motifs from ancient philosophy and other religions. Nygren's claim that Martin Luther's doctrine of justification restored the meaning of the early Christian basic motive of selfless love agape is characteristic of the Swedish Luther Renaissance .

Nygren supported the fight of the Confessing Church against National Socialism in Germany and was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit in 1955. When the Lutheran World Federation was founded in 1947, he was elected chairman (until 1952). Nygren was also active in other ecumenical organizations, especially the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches (WCC) . In 1949 Nygren became bishop in the diocese of Lund .

After his retirement in 1958, Nygren continued to work scientifically; among other places he taught in the USA . In his late work Meaning and Method (1972), Nygren takes up impulses from Ludwig Wittgenstein's philosophy of language .
