Carl Stange (born March 7, 1870 in Hamburg ; † December 5, 1959 in Göttingen ) was a Lutheran theologian , university professor and abbot of the Bursfelde monastery in the Weser Uplands .

Live and act

Carl Stange studied theology at the universities of Halle , Göttingen , Leipzig and Jena from 1888 to 1892 , and became a private lecturer at the theological faculty in Halle .

In 1903 Stange took on an unscheduled professorship at the University of Königsberg and in 1904 he became a professor in Greifswald , where he held the post of university rector in 1911/12.

In 1912, Carl Stange was appointed professor for systematic theology at the University of Göttingen, succeeding Paul Althaus the Elder , where he led the homiletic seminar together with Johannes Meyer . He was also a university preacher. He was retired on September 30, 1935.

On April 1, 1932, Carl Stange was appointed abbot of the Bursfelde monastery at Hann. Münden , lost this title in 1937 and held it again from 1949 until his death in 1959.

Carl Stange is considered a conservative Lutheran theologian. He directed u. a. the apologetic seminar founded in 1909 in Wernigerode (later the Luther Academy in Sondershausen ) and was a member of the General Evangelical Lutheran Conference .

In 1903 Carl Stange received the title of theological doctor from the University of Halle and in 1912 an honorary doctorate in philosophy from the Universities of Athens , Ödenburg and Uppsala .

He was the father of the sinologist Hans OH Stange (1903–1978) and the brother of the theologian Erich Stange (1888–1972).
