The Hamamatsuchō Station ( Jap. 浜松町駅 , Hamamatsuchō-eki ) is located in Minato in Tokyo , Japan . The terminus of the monorail route to Haneda Airport is officially known as the Hamamatsuchō Monorail Station ( モ ノ レ ー ル 浜 松 町 駅 , Monorēru-Hamamatsuchō-eki ).

history

Hamamatsucho station was opened on December 16, 1909 as a through station on the newly opened line of the Japanese National Railways from Shinagawa to Karasumori . The monorail route to Haneda has been in operation since September 17, 1964. On October 1, 1964, the Daimon subway station on the Toei Asakusa line , which was built under the station, went into operation; a direct change between the subway and the JR lines or the monorail is not possible. Since December 12, 2000, the Daimon subway station has also been served by trains on the Toei Ōedo line . Since July 14, 2002, trains on the Keihin Tōhoku Line have been arriving at JR Hamamatsuchō Station.

Type of construction and tracks

The JR station is built as a through station in the most common type of station. It has four tracks, which are used by two central platforms and run in a north-south direction. The trains of the Keihin-Tōhoku line run on the two outer tracks 1 and 4, while the trains of the Yamanote line run on the inner tracks 2 and 3 . The tracks at the station are therefore approached according to the direction of travel and not according to the line they belong to.

The monorail station is above and to the west of the JR platforms. The monorail station has only one track, the Spanish solution is used for getting on and off . Immediately after leaving the station, the train crosses the JR tracks from west to east.

To the east of the station, the tracks of the Tōkaidō Shinkansen and the Tōkaidō main line from Tokyo Station pass by.

Manneken Pis at Hamamatsucho station

A Manneken Pis has been standing on the platform of tracks 3 and 4 of the JR station at its southern end since 1952 . The figure was donated by Kobayashi Hikaru for the 80th anniversary of the tracks running here. Originally made of white porcelain, the figure was replaced by the current bronze figure in 1968. Like its role model in Brussels , the figure is put on a new costume to match the season on the 26th of each month.

The World Trade Center Tokyo stands directly to the west of the tracks and part of its lower floors serves as a building for the station.

The Tokyo Tower ( 東京 タ ワ ー , Tōkyō tawā ) and the Sanen-zan Zōjō-ji ( 三 縁 山 増 上 寺 , Sanen-zan Zōjō-ji ) are a bit away from the train station but can be reached on foot . The two facilities are about one kilometer and 800 m west of the train station, respectively. The Sanen-zan Zōjō-ji is a Buddhist temple and once served the Tokugawa family during their rule as their family temple, six of the 15 Tokugawa shoguns are buried here.
