Future replacement

In January 2018, the Cambodian government approved a proposal to build a new airport for Phnom Penh. It is estimated to cost $ 1.5 billion. The new international airport will replace the existing Phnom Penh International Airport. Initial plans envisage building the construction on partially raised land next to the Boueng Cheung Loung, a large lake in the province of Kandal, about 30 kilometers south of Phnom Penh. Cambodia Airport Investment, a joint venture 90 percent owned by Overseas Cambodia Investment Corporation (OCIC), one of the largest real estate developers in the country, and 10 percent owned by the government's Secretary of State for Civil Aviation, plans to raise $ 1.5 billion for to invest in the construction of the new airport. OCIC will invest $ 280 million while unspecified "foreign banks" will provide $ 1.1 billion in funding. The OCIC will hold 90 percent of the shares in the completed airport, the rest will go to the SSCA. While the construction plans are still in the early stages of development, the 4F class airport will be able to handle large and long-haul aircraft and is expected to cover an area of around 2,600 hectares, making it one of the largest airports in the world.
