The Reggio Calabria Airport ( ital .: Aeroporto di Reggio Calabria - Aeroporto dello Stretto "Tito Minniti" ) is located in the south of Reggio Calabria , at the tip of the Italian boot, near the Sicilian port city of Messina . Along with the airports of Lamezia Terme and Crotone he is one of three airports in the region Calabria .

history

Reggio Calabria Airport was created as a military airfield in 1939 and named after the pilot Tito Minniti. The first scheduled flights began in April 1947. In 1976 the airport was definitively transferred to the civil aviation administration. Lamezia Terme Airport, which opened at the same time, quickly became a competitor due to its more central location in Calabria. The relatively short runways in Reggio Calabria also hindered a more positive development of commercial air traffic. The expansion of Reggio Calabria Airport has now been accelerated somewhat.

Transport links

  • Cars : From the terminal, Via Ravagnese leads north to the city center, just under five kilometers away, and south-east to state road 106 . The latter bypasses the city center as RA4 in a northerly direction and has a connection to the A2 motorway and the state road 18 to Naples that runs next to it , in the opposite direction the SS 106 leads along the southern Ionian coast to Taranto in Apulia . A number of streets branch off from the main traffic axes mentioned in the Aspromonte .
  • Bus : The urban ATAM buses connect the airport with the city center, the port and the main train station. A bus line called "Volobus" goes to the port of Villa San Giovanni further north , from where there are ferry connections to Messina. The bus route "Jonica Line" offers trips to Caulonia on the south coast of Calabria.
  • Boat : Boats connect the airport with the ports of Reggio Calabria, Villa San Giovanni and Messina ( metromare ) and with the Aeolian Islands . Buses run from the terminal to the boat dock in the south of the airport.

Airlines and Destinations

Alitalia flies from Reggio Calabria to Rome and Milan several times a day . Air Malta connects Reggio Calabria with Malta .

Special approach procedure

In aviation circles , the Aeroporto dello Stretto is respectfully referred to as the European Kai Tak . The approach procedure to runway 33 is similar to the famous checkerboard approach of the former Hong Kong airport.

The approach to runway 33 in Reggio Calabria is a challenge for pilots for the following reasons:

  • An ILS-like approach without a glide path (a so-called circling non-precision approach ) must be carried out in a topographically difficult terrain. Four different heights have to be adhered to exactly.
  • the final approach course is offset by 46 ° (in Kai Tak 43 °) in relation to the runway direction. The necessary correction must be made in the last part of the approach.
  • the runway is short.

The approach may only be carried out with special training. Numerous optical aids help with flight guidance. The airport is working to improve the situation. In the database of the Aviation Safety Network , in which serious flight incidents and accidents have been recorded since 1943, there is not a single one on this approach.
