The Olbia airport ( Italian Aeroporto di Olbia-Costa Smeralda ; IATA code : OLB , ICAO code : LIEO ) is the airport the port city of Olbia in Sardinia , Italy . It is one of three international airports on the island and in particular serves the exclusive tourist region of Costa Smeralda .

Location and transport links

The airport is three kilometers southeast of the city center of Olbia. The airport can be reached by vehicle from Olbia via the SS 125 state road. The ASPO city bus line 2 connects the airport every ten to twenty minutes with the city center and the main train station in Olbia. There are also various overland connections, for example to Cagliari, Santa Teresa Gallura, San Teodoro, Siniscola and the Costa Smeralda. Some are only offered during the season and are put out to tender annually, which means that the operators of the line connections can change.

The airport has a runway around 2745 meters long (05/23). The main apron with the passenger terminal for commercial flights is centrally located north of the runway and the taxiway running parallel to it . The terminal, with a capacity of around 4.5 million passengers per year, has five passenger boarding bridges . Inside there are check-in counters, among other things, a shopping arcade with around 3000 m² of retail space, training and conference facilities as well as restaurants and bars. The most famous car rental companies are represented. There are parking spaces for around 1700 vehicles.

To the northeast of the passenger terminal there is an aircraft maintenance center with a few hangars , and to the southwest is a relatively large general aviation terminal with a separate apron for general aviation . In total, the airport has almost 70 parking spaces for aircraft.

Airlines and Destinations

Alitalia connects Olbia with Rome and other destinations on mainland Italy.

In the summer months there are numerous charter flights to and from all over Europe. From German-speaking countries, Olbia is currently served by Lufthansa from Munich and Frankfurt , with Eurowings from Düsseldorf , Cologne / Bonn , Munich, Hamburg , Stuttgart , Salzburg and Vienna and with easyJet from Berlin-Tegel and Geneva . Edelweiss Air also connects Zurich and Olbia.

In the summer of 2019, the German Private Wings flew every Sunday from the Ingolstadt / Manching air base via Aosta to Olbia Airport.

history

As in the regional capital Cagliari , civil aviation began in Olbia (at that time still called Terranova) with flying boats that could enter the port city's roadstead . For this purpose, appropriate landing stages and handling facilities were built at the port ( ). An airfield for conventional land planes was also built ( ). Liner services between the mainland and Sardinia were started on the Ostia -Olbia-Cagliari route on April 21, 1928 by the Società Aerea Mediterranea . In 1929 one began to fly from Rome directly to Cagliari and also on to Tunis , which meant a setback for Olbia. During the Second World War , only Olbia was served in the civil service between the mainland and Sardinia. Before the war, the Olbia-Venafiorita military airfield (also “Vena Fiorita”; flug ) was built in the south of the city, around five kilometers southwest of today's airport . At the end of the 1940s, the short-lived Sardinian airline Airone resumed scheduled flights with planes of the type Fiat G.12 . In 1963, Karim Aga Khan IV. Founded the airline Alisarda (later Meridiana, most recently until the bankruptcy 2020 Air Italy ), which began operations the following year at Venafiorita airport. The move from Venafiorita to the new airport took place in 1974. The private operating company Geasar , founded in 1985, took over the airport in 1989. The terminal of the Costa Smeralda airport was renewed from 2000 to 2004, expanded somewhat in 2020 and the runway renovated and operated extended by 300 meters.

A reactivation of the Venafiorita airport for general aviation was considered several times, as this air traffic had increased significantly due to the rather exclusive tourism in the region. The planned construction of a compression system for the Algeria-Sardinia-Italy gas pipeline on the largely disused apron of the airport is very controversial .
