The Lamezia Terme airport ( Italian Aeroporto di Lamezia Terme , IATA code : SUF , ICAO code : LICA ) is Lamezia Terme in Italian Calabria . The IATA airport code SUF is derived from Sant'Eufemia, the district of Lamezia Terme that is closest to the airport. The airport , which opened in 1976, is operated by Società Aeroportuale Calabrese SpA (SACAL).
Regional traffic concept
Of the three commercial airports in Calabria, Lamezia Terme is by far the busiest with around three million passengers a year (until 2019). It mainly serves to develop the northern Tyrrhenian coast of the region and has good intermodal connections to the A2 motorway , the Tirrenica Meridionale railway line and the Gioia Tauro container port . The catchment area of the airport includes the cities of Cosenza , Catanzaro and Vibo Valentia as well as tourist places such as Tropea . The Reggio Calabria airport is rather the western part of Calabria and Sicilian city of Messina , the little Crotone airport especially the tourist development of the south coast on the Ionian Sea . Lamezia Terme Airport benefits from its central location in Calabria, a region with only two million inhabitants.
Connection
Two kilometers northeast of the airport is the main train station of Lamezia Terme ( Stazione Centrale di Lamezia Terme ) near Sant'Eufemia . From the railway line running along the Tyrrhenian coast, a branch line branches off to Lamezia Terme (city), Catanzaro and on to the Ionian coast. So far, buses have been running between the airport and the main train station, a rail connection to the airport is planned.
The tourist resorts on the Tyrrhenian coast can be easily reached from the airport via State Road 18 and some shorter branch lines. Cosenza in the north and Gioia Tauro in the south are connected via the A3 motorway, Catanzaro in the east via the state road 280 .
Lamezia Terme is served by Lufthansa , Eurowings , Condor, Austrian Airlines , Ryanair , Helvetic Airways and People’s from German-speaking countries . Alitalia , in particular, offers connections within Italy . The Canadian Air Transat connects Lamezia Terme seasonally with Toronto .
Infrastructure
The airport has a passenger terminal and a freight terminal. Their expansion and the construction of a train station is planned. The runway was extended from 2,400 to 3,000 meters in 2016. An ILS CAT I is available for landing threshold 28 . In the northwest there is a military section, on which mainly helicopters are stationed.
