The port of Gioia Tauro is an Italian seaport in Calabria . In terms of handling figures, it is one of the largest container ports and transshipment hubs in the Mediterranean .
Location and infrastructure
The port of Gioia Tauro is strategically located on the shipping route between Gibraltar and the Suez Canal . Multimodal it is connected via the A3 motorway , the Tirrenica Meridionale railway line and Lamezia Terme Airport .
Characteristic of the 1995 opened the port is its shape: a 300-meter-wide harbor entrance followed by a turning basin with a diameter of 750 meters and this one more than three kilometers long and 250 meters wide and up to 18 meters deep harbor basin as a branch canal, which runs parallel to the coast to the north. At its end there is a second, smaller turning basin. The quays are over 5,100 meters long, of which almost 3,400 meters are on the east side, around 800 meters in the north and over 900 meters in the west. There are 22 harbor cranes .
Administration and operation
The port is managed by a regional port authority based in Gioia Tauro. The handling of the cargo is organized by Medcenter Container Terminal , which has been owned by the Mediterranean Shipping Company since 2020 . In 2008, container throughput reached a peak of just under 3.5 million TEU . The port has not yet recovered from the economic crisis that followed. In 2015, the throughput amounted to 2.5 million TEU. The port is served by the Mediterranean Shipping Company, Mærsk Line , CMA CGM and Hamburg Süd , among others . The port is part of the American Container Security Initiative . The International Ship and Port Facility Security Code has been implemented.
history
The construction of the port is linked to the activation of the constitutional organs of the Calabria region in 1970. This resulted in disputes between the cities of Catanzaro and Reggio Calabria over the status of regional capital. The government in Rome tried to compensate Reggio Calabria with the construction of a steel works complex with an attached seaport at Gioia Tauro. Because of the steel crisis , the project was abandoned, as was a planned coal-fired power plant . The port was largely completed in the late 1970s, but had no real function. Angelo Ravano, founder of Contship Italia , then proposed the conversion to a container port, which should find its role as a transshipment hub on the important shipping route between Gibraltar and Suez. The port of Gioia Tauro was opened in this form in 1995. A concession was awarded to Contship Italia , the majority of which belongs to the Hamburg Eurokai group, to organize the handling . It operated the Medcenter Container Terminal in Gioia Tauro until 2019, when it was acquired by the Mediterranean Shipping Company through its Terminal Investment Ltd. (TiL) acquired.
The port is struggling with the infiltration attempts by the mafia organization 'Ndrangheta . In 2006, Italian police issued a report suggesting that around 80 percent of cocaine coming to Europe from Colombia is smuggled through the port of Gioia Tauro.
