The Pantelleria Airport is an Italian commercial airport on between Sicily and Tunisia situated Mediterranean island of Pantelleria .
Civil part
The civil part of the airport is subordinate to the civil aviation authority ENAC and is operated by the local airport company GAP. The Venetian airport company SAVE and the municipality of Pantelleria are mainly involved in the GAP .
The airport has two relatively short runways and a small passenger terminal that handles around 170,000 passengers annually. There are line connections to Trapani and Palermo in Sicily, as well as to Rome and Milan . In the summer months there is increased charter traffic from northern Italy. In addition, general aviation is handled.
Military part
The airport was created as a military airfield shortly before the Second World War . Heavy Allied bombing destroyed it in 1943, but shortly afterwards the Americans rebuilt it. During the Cold War it remained under military control as an advanced base, but was also opened to civil traffic within Italy. The airport finally passed into civilian hands, but the Italian Air Force reserved the right to use it for military purposes. On the military part there is an aircraft cavern driven into a mountain and underground fuel and ammunition depots. As a forward base, the military part is only used sporadically today. In 2011 the Italian government made him available for the international military operation in Libya .
