The airfield is mainly used by the Italian army aviators . The Army Aviation Command, the Army Aviation Training Center, the 4th Army Aviation Support Department (maintenance, repair, logistics) and the 1st Army Aviation Regiment "Antares" and the 3rd Army Aviation Regiment "Aldebaran" are located here. The latter is used to support special forces and is equipped with helicopters of the type CH-47F Chinook . The NCO School of the Italian Air Force is also located on the site . The NCO School of the Army is also based in Viterbo. Senior NCOs are trained at both schools in collaboration with the University of Tuscia .
history
The Viterbo military airfield was opened in 1937 and was initially the base of a squadron (9º Stormo). From May 1943 to June 1944, the German Air Force stationed an air base command here. During this time, parts of Kampfgeschwader 1 and 30 and Schlachtgeschwader 4 were located here .
From the 1940s to 2005, conscripts of the Italian Air Force completed their general basic training here . With the suspension of compulsory military service, the Air Force NCO School took over a number of facilities on the airfield in 2005. For the Italian Army Aviation (re) established in 1953 , Viterbo became the center of their development and expansion.
Since 2007 the Ministry of Transport in Rome has been planning to expand the Viterbo military airfield into the third commercial airport in the Italian capital. Above all, it should take over the low-cost traffic from Rome-Ciampino . New roads and railway lines should also be built to improve transport connections to the new Rome-Viterbo airport. On January 29, 2013 the planning of this project was finally finished.
